End of an Era: Remembering President Muhammadu Buhari (1942–2025)

It is with deep sorrow that Nigeria mourns the passing of Major General Muhammadu Buhari, who died today, July 13, 2025, in London at the age of 82.

Buhari was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, having served both as a military head of state and as a democratically elected president.

A Life Bridging Two Eras

Buhari’s unique political journey began with his tenure as Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, during which he launched the renowned “War Against Indiscipline” and became known for his stern leadership. Decades later, he re-emerged as a democratic leader, winning the presidency in 2015 and securing re-election in 2019 — becoming the first Nigerian president to unseat an incumbent in a democratic election.

A Human Farewell

In April 2023, nearing the end of his presidency, Buhari made a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians:

“   Whoever thought that there has been some form of injustice on him, we are all humans. There is no doubt I hurt some people, and I wish they would pardon me and those who think that I have hurt them, please pardon me.”

These sincere words reflected a leader aware of the complexities and challenges of governance, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation.

The Final Chapter

After stepping down in May 2023, Buhari retired to his hometown in Katsina before seeking medical treatment in London. He passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025. President Bola Tinubu has declared a national mourning period, with flags flying at half-staff across the nation. Vice President Kashim Shettima has been dispatched to London to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.

Legacy and Reflection

As noted by political commentator Lakadri Ibrahim:

Indeed, Buhari was the last prominent figure to bridge Nigeria’s military past and democratic present. His legacy is complex — marked by anti-corruption efforts, economic challenges, and a leadership style that elicited both praise and criticism.

“The last Second republican both military and politician that will ever grace thelimelight of the Nigerian political realm… I am proud to say Buhari’s legacy outlived what we had since 1985.”

In Memoriam

Today, Nigerians reflect on the life of a leader who shaped the country’s trajectory for nearly four decades. His final plea for pardon serves as a reminder of our shared humanity — even in leadership.

 me.”

May his journey inspire future leaders to govern with courage, humility, and compassion.
